Maintenance 01
Stage 3: Beyond cleaning
I use three broad stages to explain the condition of an outdoor unit's condenser coil. This is Stage 3: extensive corrosion and deterioration of the heat-transfer surface.
Cleaning cannot replace metal that has deteriorated away. In a coil this far gone, repairing an individual refrigerant leak would not restore the rest of the coil or make it a repair I could stand behind. Some manufacturers offer a complete replacement coil, but availability, labor, refrigerant, and the condition of the remaining equipment all matter. In cases like this, a coil replacement is often difficult to justify financially.
- Severe coil deterioration
The damaged fins and corroded structure are the issue, not simply surface dirt.
